Demographic data

The 74’435 CHF. 20.49% of the population hold a university degree, 17.98% have a higher vocational education qualification, 42.05% of the population have a school-leaving certificate or finished a vocational apprenticeship and 19.48% of residents are enrolled in compulsory schooling. Consequently, the area has high social standards. Currently, 1.32% of the population is unemployed.

Taxes

The total tax percentage in the region is 11.34%. How much tax individuals pay depends on a number of factors, including actual income, marital status and the overall level of deductions. A married couple on a pension (over 65) pays an average of 14.22% tax, a married couple with two children 7.73% and a childless couple 10.31%. The tax burden for an unmarried person without children is 16.08%.

New buildings

New living space has been created in the District of Aarau within the past 5 years. For instance, 2520 new apartments were created. One-room apartments comprise 161 of the newly built apartments – an excellent option for people living alone. Additional 2-room apartments have also been built; 625 apartments of this size were added in total. What's more, 746 3-room apartments and 635 4-room apartments have been constructed. The available housing stock was also expanded to include 273 5-room apartments and 80 apartments with a minimum of 6 rooms.

New builds have further expanded the housing stock in the region; there are now a total of 41’019 apartments in the District of Aarau. The number of 1-room apartments is 1755. Additionally, there are 4751 apartments with 2 rooms, 10’569 apartments with 3 rooms and 12’116 apartments with a full 4 rooms. Overall, there are 7767 5-room apartments and 4061 large apartments with a minimum of 6 rooms.

Unoccupied apartments

The 0.87% of apartments in the District of Aarau are empty. Consequently, 0.69% of the 1-room apartments, 0.87% of the apartments with 2 rooms, 1.15% of apartments with 3 rooms, 0.93% of 4-room apartments and 0.67% of all 5-room apartments are presently vacant. The vacancy rate for apartments with more than 5 rooms is 0.4%; 0.4% of those vacant properties are apartments with at least 6 rooms.

Housing market (letting only)
